Many of us do not think about pool safety, but drowning is one of the single biggest accidents with regards to children. It only takes a spit second for an accident to happen, so we must not assume that just because a child can swim, he does not need supervision. Here are some tips and safety precautions to follow.

1.	The key is always adult supervision. Scraping your knee won’t render you unconscious, but a head injury or a muscle cramp could. That’s why it is important for a parent or guardian to be around if such situations should arise.

2.	It is a great idea for kids 4 and above to attend a pool safety swim class, (certified). At the very least teach them some basic life saving and flotation techniques. Any kid under this age, a parent should be at poolside.

3.	Law in many states requires a pool fence. Keep the gate(s) locked when not in use. This will prevent anyone small that could open and come in without an adult present.

4.	One may think that a small body of water like a wading pool is safe for kids to swim alone. Any body of water is dangerous around small children with out adult supervision.

5.	If you have a pool cover or solar cover on the pool, when you swim, always take it completely off. Do not swim in a partially open. This is a huge pool safety hazard. And never let anyone walk over a covered pool.

6.	Young children can be overcame by Spa and Hot Tub heat, so they should not be allowed in the water.

7.	It is a great idea to have flotation devices around your pool. Noodles, boogie boards for example are great.

8.	It is a great idea for parents of children to take a basic CPR class to know these life saving techniques in case there is ever an emergency.

9.	The best thing you can do with regards to pool safety is always being observant. Be sure to supervise children and their activities at all times. Prevention is your best friend.
