A stainless steel patio heater holds up very well to the outside elements. Unlike painted surfaces, there is no paint chipping or peeling. And although copper finished patio heaters are very nice looking and attractive, the copper will patina over time. It also seems like a stainless steel patio heater goes with any type of outside decor you may have. I love ours and am glad that we purchased it.

Some features to look for in a stainless steel patio heater are,

1. BTU rating.. you should look for a heater that will put out at least 40,000 BTU’s of heat. Anything smaller will not heat efficiently enough. You and your guests will be hovering around it in really tight formation.

2. Electronic ignition. I would say that most if not all of the outside heaters will have this feature, so you should not have to worry about this. Piezo type ignition is probably the standard anymore and works very well and holds up for years.

3. Make sure they fit the standard 20lb propane tanks. This size of tank is the most standard type of tank, and will provide ease of portability when its time to refuel, and because its a decent size, you wont be filling it up every hour.

4. Make sure your unit has a tilt valve so if it topples over, it will automatically shut off. This is a MUST HAVE safety feature.

5. Make sure the unit has a weighted base and wheels on it. You want the stability of a proper base and the wheels so you can roll it around easy enough. A stainless steel patio heater tends to have some weight to it, so the wheels will be an added benefit.

6. Make sure the burner(s) assembly(s) are made of stainless steel. If they are not, they will burn out premeturaly because of the intense heat from the flame. Most of the types of stainless steel patio heater will come with a stainless steel burner so this should not be an issue when you purchase. Just to be safe, look for it.
