This is a good question… What is the best pool cleaner? Well in terms of the ability to clean your pool, I would say all of them do an admiral job at doing what they are suppose to do. We sell all types of pool cleaners, and the feedback I get is that they all do good. Then what should be your considerations when purchasing a pool cleaner? Lets find out some basic differences between them.

When considering purchasing a pool cleaner, maybe we shouldn’t always look at it as what is the “best pool cleaner“, but what is the best choice for me. Thinking as what kind of pool do I have and what is my budget. There are 3 basic type of pool cleaners being, suction side, pressure side and robotic.

Suction side are the least expensive and can be fitted to just about any pool. As the word suction states, they hook up to the suction side of your pool pump and filter, and use your current filtering system to clean. They tend to be the simplest in design hence less expensive. These work great with above ground and inground pools. These types are very popular because of these features.

A pressure side pool cleaner is what I have, and was fitted to our pool when it was built. This type of cleaner uses the pressure side of your pool pump and some (like mine), have their own auxiliary pump to boost up the pressure and reduce the strain on your filtering pump. Another benefit of pressure side pool cleaners it that they pick up debris and contain it in their own filtering bags. This is great as it allows you to clean your pool with out using your pool filtering system, thus reducing extra back washing. I really like mine because of this, and the fact that it falls in between the price of the least expensive and most expensive pool cleaner models.

Some people consider the robotic cleaners as the best pool cleaner. I do not necessarily take that view on it. Robotic cleaners are completely self-contained units, and use nothing from your pool filtering system. They are self powered, (via low voltage 12 volt, usually) and collect debris in their own collection system. They usually have tracks like a tank, and scrub brush system on board. Many can climb walls up to the water lines, and the extra scrubbing is good for any algae build up that you may have. Being the most complicated in design also means these types are usually the most expensive. Trade off is they usually have the most cleaning power ability.

When considering a cleaner for you pool, remember do not think of it as what is the best pool cleaner, but what suites me taking into consideration price, new pool installation, and the degree of current maintenance you perform on your pool now. With the different types and models available out there, it’s almost like going down the cereal isle at your local supermarket…lol

Pool cleaning can be a laborious task. When I lived with my parents long ago (well not too long ago), I remember my father taking care of our pool. He would clean it by hand once a week with a hand held pool vacuum cleaner. It would take him about 2 ½ hours to finish. I think he liked doing it, but I never could tell. For me personally, I would rather use an Automatic Pool Cleaner.

There are 3 basic types of Automatic Pool Cleaner. Pressure side pool cleaners, suction side pool cleaners and robotic pool cleaners. All can be good choices, each one has it’s pro’s and cons.

Pressure side pool cleaners use the water pressure from your return side of your pool filtering system. This water pressure gives them the power needed to scoot along the bottom of your pool. They contain their own filtering bags, so they will not use your filter to clean debris from the water. The cons for these types of cleaners are that when the filter bag fills up, they do not clean, but just stir-up any remaining debris. The good thing though is that they do not use your pool filter to clean.

Suction side Automatic Pool Cleaner do the opposite of pressure side cleaners. As the name implies, they hook up to the suction side ports of your pool filtering system. They use pulses of water to randomly move around your pool. Large debris is caught in your strainer basket, while smaller debris is cleaned by your pool filter. Pros of these types of pool cleaners are that they usually are the least expensive of the others. Cons are that the clog easier, you need to make sure you have enough hose length, so you don’t restrict any movements and the suction strength needs to be adjusted correctly for optimal performance.

Robotic pool cleaners are stand alone units that run entirely separate of any of your swimming pool systems. They run off low voltage power supplies that you plug in to an electrical outlet and have their own filtering systems that are usually bigger than pressure type cleaners. These cleaners are more expensive than the other two types. And they have electrical cords, but if you follow manufactures instructions, there are no dangers. The pro’s are that they do not put any additional loads on your pump and filter systems. These cleaners range in style and size, with computer chip operated models to remote control models.

In my book, anyway you cut it; an Automatic Pool Cleaner is the way to go. Depending on you budget and desire, all 3 types will do a fine job of cleaning your pool
