You should use a pool shock treatment every 2-weeks. Or after a heavy day of raining or when many people swimming in your pool. Why should you? Even when you check your chlorine levels on a regular basis.. and their fine. Well regularly adding chlorine to a pool is part of maintaining your water chemistry. The chlorine attaches to all the bacteria and all other molecular organic matter and neutralizes it. After the chlorine becomes combined with the bacteria it becomes inactive. When this happens its called “combined chlorine” This inactive chlorine needs to be removed, and that is done by shocking your pool.

There are a few different types of pool shock treatment on the market today,

The pool shock treatment that is widely used the most is calcium hypochlorite. This type has been on the market for a while. It usually comes in concentrates of 75%, so when purchasing this look for this number. Some manufactures offer this type of shock that allows you to swim immediately after using, but the concentration of active chemicals is lower, and may not be effective enough to kill all the bacterial.

Chlorine free pool shock treatment is great, because it uses potassium monopersulfate as the active ingredient to destroy the bacteria. It does its job without raising the chlorine levels, which is great. After applying this type of shock, you can swim 1 hour after. And when using chlorine free pool shock, you do not run the risk of raising your PH levels like you do with calcium hypochlorite.

Another type of pool shock treatment is lithium shock. This type of shock uses lithium hypochlorite instead of the calcium version. This type of shock dissolves in water quickly and does not affect the calcium levels. This shock is superior to the other types but cost more, so it tends to be not as popular.

Liquid Chlorine is available as a shock, but should not be used because of its dangerous handling. Besides being less efficient at shocking your pool, you have to be careful of how you dispose of the empty bottles, because of the liquid chlorine residue. In our opinion, it is the best and safest to only use granular shock as a pool shock treatment.

Swim Season is around the corner. We just had a past weekend of really warm weather in the Northeast. I woke up on Sunday morning, and it’s like the tree leaves popped out overnight. It was just amazing. The swim bug is in us now. Time to open up the pool and time to purchase my Above Ground Pool Supplies.

A lot of people wait last minute to stock up, but I do not. I purchase all of my Above Ground Pool Supplies well in advance of the season, so if I do forget anything, I will have ample time to order before we start swimming. A lot of people wait until Memorial Day to open up their pools, but not us. We open up our pool in early to mid May each year.

The first thing we stock up on is the 15,000 Gallon spring Start-Up Kit. This includes 1 pint of the Halt 50 Algaecide, 1 pint of Shimmer, 1 quart of Super Rust & Scale and 2 lbs of Burst Shock. It’s all pre-formulated for my pool, so I just add the whole kit. Instructions come with the kit, so it’s a breeze.

Then I purchase my Chlorine. I purchase the 3 “ Tablets in the 50lb size. That usually last us the whole season. I like to buy once a year and not have to worry about replenishing until next season. Next I check to make sure I have enough test trips so I can keep tabs on my water chemistry. I also stock up on Tile & Filter Cleaners, more Pool Algaecide and Water Balancers to keep my water pH in check and extra Shock and Flock.

Other than all the Pool Chemicals, Pool floats and Pool Toys are the only other Above Ground Pool Supplies that we need. I’m going to buy the Jet Net Radio Controlled Leaf Catcher this year. It looks like a fun way to skim the top of the pool to clean it. It looks like a pontoon boat. I think I will have no problem getting my kids to help with cleaning the leaves out of the pool this year.
