If you own your very own swimming pool in your backyard, it is important that you should know that you have some responsibilities. These responsibilities include making sure that your swimmers can freely swim in your pool without getting any negative experience with the bacteria and all the dirt that they can get. For this reason, you will need swimming pool chemicals in order to the job properly.

It is important that you maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of your swimming pool. The reason behind this is so that you will not encounter any health problems with the people who have swam in your pool. This is especially more important if you have a public swimming pool which a lot of people are going to. Thus, it is important that you have the appropriate swimming pool chemicals to do this job.

Among all the swimming pool chemicals being used, the two most popular are pool chlorine and bromine. There are several people who will tell you that these two chemicals don’t have separate characteristics. However, this is not entirely true. While these two swimming pool chemicals may have similar purposes, there are a number of differences among them. There will even come an instance where you will favor one over the other chemical.

Swimming pool chemicals are important to be used in making sure your swimming pool is safe enough to be in. This is because if you leave your pool unmaintained, the number of bacteria and the other harmful contaminants can cause several health concerns to those who have swam in your pool. Aside from potentially transmitting skin to skin infections across several swimmers, it is also possible to transmit various diseases.

However, if you make sure that you have a regular swimming pool maintenance routine and if you are using the appropriate swimming pool chemicals, you can be guaranteed that your swimming pool is an environment which is both healthy and sanitary.
The role of chlorine in the swimming pool is that it is among the effective swimming pool chemicals which can clean the pool water from the various types of germs. There will be an obvious difference in the pool water after you have made use of chlorine.

Aside from chlorine, stabilizer is also among the important swimming pool chemicals which will complete the cleaning and protection of your swimming pool. This chemical will make sure that the pH level of your pool water is stable. This can be done with the use of a test kit. In doing so, you can determine if your pool will be needing other swimming pool chemicals so that it can be thoroughly cleaned.

If there is algae in your pool, you can make use of algaecide. This is one of the many swimming pool chemicals which have been specifically made to get rid of the algae which are in the water. This chemical works by minimizing the growth of algae and also to provide you with the best pool water.
If you don’t want to go through the trouble of cleaning your pool with the use of your very own swimming pool chemicals, you can always hire the service of the professionals. These people will clean your pool and make sure it’s safe for a fee.

Many people don’t know enough about the care and maintenance required when they have their own pool. It’s like having a dog. Having a dog is a great thing, but then you have to clean up after it. The same thing holds true for pools. You need to check your above ground pool chemicals to make sure your pool is one hundred percent clean and safe for you and your family. You need to constantly check your pool for the presence of required chemicals, as well as toxins.

The above ground pool chemicals in the water must be balanced in its acidity. The pH for neutral is seven, right in the middle of the acid / base scale. You should check these levels at least twice a week. If your pool is too acidic, then you need to add in alkalinity controls. Pools naturally should be checked every day for its sanitizing agents, most notably chlorine. Chlorine levels are essential to a pool and should be around two parts per million.

Too much chlorine can be a bad thing, so there are alternative above ground pool chemicals out there such as Nature2 CF Mineral Sanitizer. These cartridges cost about sixty dollars, are easy to install, and last about four months. These cartridges kill bacteria and algae. The advantage with this alternative is less maintenance is needed and the pools have overall fewer chemicals. Algae are a big nuisance in pools as they create cloudy water and they can grow endlessly being in the sun all day.

There are algaecides that are good in reducing algae growth such as Total Algaecide 60. It eliminates all algae, and works well with any other above ground pool chemicals such as chlorine and bromine. Shock treatments need to be done to pools frequently. All of the left over chlorine mixed in with the organic chemicals that originated in our bodies can cloud the chlorine’s ability to sanitize, and also cause red eyes if it gets in your eyes. For shocks, you can use Dichlor products which shock the pool and remove all of these toxins. Overall, there is a lot of work that needs to be done to keep your pool up and running cleanly, but when it is clean, you will notice a big difference and have a relaxing pool experience.

Aparna presents Swimming in over-chlorinated pools can have adverse effects on your skin, hair and teeth posted at Beauty and Personality Grooming, saying, “Most swimming pools, especially in the third world countries use chlorine as it is the cheapest and one of the most efficient ways of disinfecting the waters. The chlorine levels in the pool waters have to be monitored constantly and regulated carefully to maintain a recommended pH level. Correct levels of chlorine in waters don’t pose much of a health hazard. But if the level becomes too high, the water can become acidic and swimming in such over-chlorinated waters can cause many problems”

When handling Pool & Spa Chemicals, here are some basic guidelines in how to handle them properly.

Make sure to read the product labels. Never relay on the brand or shape of the bottle before you mix any chemicals. You can mix some toxic combinations if you are not careful.

When working with Pool & Spa Chemicals, wear protective clothing. A lab coat is a great idea in protecting your clothing underneath. Also good thing is to wear long pants and long sleeve shirts. You should also wear an old pair of shoes that cover your feet entirely. And one more thing, wear protective safety glasses too. You DO NOT want to get any chemicals in your eyes.

In an excerpt from Lisa Hallet Taylor from About.com,

“While pool chemicals are necessary to destroy pathogens and maintain a clean swimming environment, mishandled chlorine and other pool chemicals are the cause of thousands of injuries and emergency room visits each year.”

Here are some other quick tips on handling and storing Pool & Spa Chemicals,

1.	When opening wet or dry containers of chemicals, be careful. Remember these are highly toxic and oxidizing chemicals.
2.	Always maintain your pool at proper levels of all chemicals. Follow manufactures instructions using a pool test kit.
3.	Store all your chemicals in a dry place. Not in the direct sun, and not by the pool.
4.	Keep all chemicals out of the reach of children and pet. Do not even give them a chance to snoop around.
5.	Your chemical storage area needs to be well ventilated and maintained. Keep lids tight on everything, and dispose of all empty containers properly
6.	Do not throw away partial full chemicals. Use them entirely before properly disposing of the bottle or containers.
7.	Always wash hands after handling Pool & Spa Chemicals. This will minimize getting any residues in your eyes or mouth.

A few safety precautions should also be considered along with proper handling

1.	Do not compensate a dirty pool by adding more chemicals. More is not better
2.	DO NOT mix any of your chemicals. This can create very toxic gasses.
3.	Never store liquids above solid chemicals. If the liquids leak on the dry chemical this can create toxic gasses.
4.	DO NOT let any of your Pool & Spa Chemicals to come in contact with any other acids, grease or oils, including any organic materials.
5.	DO NOT smoke in the close proximity of your chemicals. Many of your chemicals are oxidizers and when they come in contact with fire, will increase its intensity.
6.	If you spill any chemicals, do not clean up the area with any other cleaning chemicals. Remember chemicals & chemicals do not mix.

Following these simple guidelines will ensure you will not have any problems with your Pool & Spa Chemicals.

Swim Season is around the corner. We just had a past weekend of really warm weather in the Northeast. I woke up on Sunday morning, and it’s like the tree leaves popped out overnight. It was just amazing. The swim bug is in us now. Time to open up the pool and time to purchase my Above Ground Pool Supplies.

A lot of people wait last minute to stock up, but I do not. I purchase all of my Above Ground Pool Supplies well in advance of the season, so if I do forget anything, I will have ample time to order before we start swimming. A lot of people wait until Memorial Day to open up their pools, but not us. We open up our pool in early to mid May each year.

The first thing we stock up on is the 15,000 Gallon spring Start-Up Kit. This includes 1 pint of the Halt 50 Algaecide, 1 pint of Shimmer, 1 quart of Super Rust & Scale and 2 lbs of Burst Shock. It’s all pre-formulated for my pool, so I just add the whole kit. Instructions come with the kit, so it’s a breeze.

Then I purchase my Chlorine. I purchase the 3 “ Tablets in the 50lb size. That usually last us the whole season. I like to buy once a year and not have to worry about replenishing until next season. Next I check to make sure I have enough test trips so I can keep tabs on my water chemistry. I also stock up on Tile & Filter Cleaners, more Pool Algaecide and Water Balancers to keep my water pH in check and extra Shock and Flock.

Other than all the Pool Chemicals, Pool floats and Pool Toys are the only other Above Ground Pool Supplies that we need. I’m going to buy the Jet Net Radio Controlled Leaf Catcher this year. It looks like a fun way to skim the top of the pool to clean it. It looks like a pontoon boat. I think I will have no problem getting my kids to help with cleaning the leaves out of the pool this year.

A lot of us owning Swimming Pools are doing our own maintenance this year. Everyone is saving all the discretionary money that they can. Doing your own Pool Maintenance isn’t all that bad. Here are some steps to ensure you can do it yourself if you never have.

There are basically 4 levels you need to keep an eye on and they are Chlorine, PH, Calcium Hardness and Total Alkalinity. Pool. You can monitor all of these levels with a Water Testing Equipment Kit, or you can use Aquacheck Silver 7-Way Test Strips. Chlorine should be checked daily. PH, Calcium and Alkalinity can be checked weekly. Most kits will tell you what to add to stabilize your water in each of these 4 areas. Make sure you add the right amount of chemicals in the right way to ensure safe and effective use.

To clean the top of the water you will have to use a hand held skimmer. I’m sure most Swimming Pool owners have one of these. Depending on where you live, you will have to clean the top of the water of debris (leaves, bugs, etc.), when needed. We have to skim our Swimming Pool every other day where we live.

Cleaning the bottom of the pool can be done by manually by a hand held Swimming Pool Vacuum. Most people now a days use an Automatic Swimming Pool Cleaner. These pool cleaners either run off of your Pool Pump and Pool Filter, or are self contained, run off of low voltage DC and deposit the debris into their own catch bags. Let your goals and budget determine which one is best suited for you and your Swimming Pool. A quick tip before you vacuum the bottom of your pool is, several hours or preferably overnight, brush the walls of your pool and let the dirt settle to the bottom. That way you can minimize your time spent cleaning the inside of your pool.

Monitor your Pool Filter weekly. Backwash if you have a D.E. or Sand Filter. For Cartridge Type Filters, lots of times you can clean them with a Pool Cartridge Cleaner and a Pool Filter Cleaning Wand. This is very crucial to do this weekly so any algae and bacteria do not build up. If this build-up does happen, you will have to use a shock treatment to your pool.

Follow all the manufacture guidelines with regards to cleaning and maintaining your Swimming Pool. It should only take a couple of hours a week of your time, and you can save money by doing it yourself in the process.

Winter is almost over and it is officially springtime in a few days. I for one cant wait!!!! I hope everyone has weathered the storm so to speak with the way the economy has been. I know we are staying closer to home this year as far as taking any vacations. We will make a few long weekenders instead of one big vacation. And we will be spending more time in our pool, because it is closer and more economical than driving to the shore. Whatever plans you are making this year, I hope that you have a great Swimming Pool Season.

Now we are looking for all the sales and bargains that we can. We have started coupon clipping once again. We are getting the Sunday Paper again, for all the weekly sales and going online to all the coupon websites to see if any of the manufactures are offering any discounts. We know this is only a temporary situation, as we all know the economy will recover.

Here are some tips that can save you some money. Things that we buy or service’s that we use each and every day.

1. Buy online to save money. Internet Stores are very competitive, and consumers are the ones that save. Amazon is a great website that comes to mind.
2. Purchase Generic medicines instead of name brand. You will save a ton of money.
3. Keep your car tires properly inflated. Under inflated tires only use more fuel and their useful life is reduced because of increased tire wear.
4. And when it is time to buy new tires, purchase them from a Costco, Sam’s Club, or any Wholesale Club that carries them. Much less expensive than dealer or even tire chain.
5. If your employer offers flexible spending accounts, take advantage of them. This allows you to pay certain dental, medical and childcare expenses using pre-tax dollars.
6. Pass on any extended warranties on lower dollar items. That type of insurance is not needed to insure small purchases.
7. Take a look at your Cable bill and eliminate some of your services. Do most of us watch all 500 channels?
8. Take advantage of 0% credit cards. You can save thousands by using zero-balance transfer credit cards. Look for what they might charge you for balance transfer fees though.
9. Do not pay checking account fees. Many banks offer fee checking, and if yours does not, ask. If they refuse, tell them you will take your business elsewhere. This worked for me.
10. Read magazines online or go to your local library to view. I did this and saved a bundle.
11. When it is time to buy a computer or electronic device, buy a factory-refurbished unit. They offer the same warranties as new, and can cost hundreds less
12. Consider VOIP telephones. We have ours through our local cable service and it is one low cost per month. No additional fees or taxes are added on.
13. Close any unused heating/cooling room vents in your house. There is no need to heat or cool any unused spaces.
14. Bring your lunch into work. It is much less expensive than eating out every day, and you can control what you eat and be healthier.
15. Replace your incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents. They use 1/3 of the energy and can last up to 7 years. I am in the process of replacing a few each month to help absorb the cost easier.

I’m sure this list can become endless, but this gives you a few ideas where you can save some money on things that we do each and every day.

Very early- inground pool designs actually used cinder blocks to form portions of the pool wall. Since then Swimming Pools have come a long way. Today the designs are endless and almost anything can be build with enough imagination and money. Here are some popular things that we are seeing in the Swimming Pool and Spa Industry.

Disappearing Edge
These types of swimming pools are also referred to Infinity Edge Pools. On one or more of the edges, the water runs off and seems to disappear. This effectively treats the pool as an extension of its natural surroundings. These pools are ideal if you have unobstructed views of landscapes or ocean type settings. What the invisible edge does is draw your attention to it. And having a beautiful background behind it can be just breathtaking.

Smooth Surfaced Pools
Above ground, Inground Vinyl liner and Fiberglass pools offer a smooth nice to the touch surface that helps and prevents scraping of toes and knees. These types of Swimming Pools come in many styles and kit forms and can be done by the DIY. Fiberglass pools can be more expensive than their concrete counterparts, but they are factory made, install in less time than concrete, and they do require less chemicals to maintain them.

Waterfalls
Becoming very popular, waterfalls can be smooth and almost noiseless to simulating huge waterfalls off of mountains or cliffs. Again all that limits you is your imagination… We have seen waterfalls that offer secluded sitting areas underneath where couples can have some alone time together. Whatever type of waterfall a swimming pool may have, they all offer nice soft tranquil sound of water cascading over and into or around your pool, very soothing in their own right.

Pool Fountains
Fountains can create a nice sound shield for your pool area. In recent years they have also incorporated fire and water into their designs. The sky is the limit with designs and function here, from nice smooth silent tight orifice type, to wide and rectangular sheets of water. Swimming Pool Fountains can add the extra touch that will make your Swimming Pool stand out for everyone else’s.

Magnetic Water Conditioners
Over time your pool can develop an oily film over the surface that can look like an oil slick. Other mineral deposits can form on your pool tile and around other areas that the pool filter will miss. Magnetic Water Conditioners turn all of these substances into larger particles that can be trapped by your Pool Filter. What you do is attach it to your return line from you Pool Filter. In doing so any scale or scum will be reduced to a minimum, and applications of your Pool Chemicals will be for efficient.

Salt Chlorinators
This is a device that turns salt into chlorine. They come size specific for your pool, and work automatically. An added benefit is they also add small amounts of ozone to your pool helping to keep it sparkling. Storing salt bags is also much more safe than storing highly oxidizing Swimming Pool Chlorine or Bromine. This is an easy way to be environmentally responsible in automatically chlorination your swimming pool.

Energy Efficient Equipment
From Pool Pumps to Pool Heaters, switching and using all energy efficient equipment can save you a lot on energy conserving your power costs over the long run. Some utility companies may offer rebates that make the cost of the switch minimal. You can contact them for names and brands of swimming pool equipment that is most efficient.

Summing it up, these are some of the trends that we are seeing going into this year’s pool season.
