I am keeping my swimming pool open up as long as I can this year.. kid you not… We are going to wait right up until the leaves change and start falling. I water is rather cold right now and unheated it has been running about 71 degrees. My kids don’t mind that temp as they will freely jump in when they get the whim. Me??…NOT.. But my wife and myself use the hot tub regularly still. Thanks to our pool heater heat pump.

We live in the Northeast as you may well know by now.. And our pool is heated via 2 methods. One is a natural gas and the other is a pool heater heat pump. The initial cost was a lot higher of course, but we are in it for the long haul. We plan to live in our house forever so I wasn’t so worried about the years it would take in savings to pay for those costs. Minus the costs, I am seeing some great savings in heating costs. Natural gas is relatively a pretty economical way to heat your pool and we are seeing great savings. I would imagine people that have to heat their pool with propane would see an awesome savings.. I know of someone that used both gas and pool heater heat pump. He had no choice and had to use propane. His savings with both of these heaters in use, was almost half of what he was spending with just the propane heater alone.

Here is a great article on pool heater heat pumps. It shows costs and CO2 emmisions that are required to use each device. It is by My Pool Guru stating,

What is the greenest way to heat your swimming pool??With the onset of global warming many people are looking at their energy consumption and wondering how they can cut down in their carbon emissions. So with that in mind we undertook a study of the greenest way to heat a swimming pool.
The 5 main ways to heat your pool are by conventional gas boiler, condensing gas boiler, oil boiler, heat pump or direct electric.
CO2 emissions

The table below shows the amount of input energy required to give an output to the water of 12,000 kw and cost impact on your bank balance and to the atmosphere.

Heater Input (KW) Cost (£) CO2 Emission (tonnes)
Conventional Gas 14,100 £388 2.68
Condensing Gas 12,370 £340 2.35
Oil 16,000 £451 4.00
Heat Pump 3,000 £283 1.29
Direct Electric 12,120 £1,142 5.19
It is clear that the heat pump comes out on top due to its 400% efficiency.

The following prices were used based on those available in February 2007.

Gas – 2.75 pence per kw/h

Oil – 30p per litre equating to 2.82 pence per kw/h

Electricity – 9.42 pence per kw/h

The CO2 emissions are from the Environment Watch website. http://www.environment-watch.co.uk/co2.cgi

If you use cheaper night time rate electricity you can greatly reduce your electricity costs but of course the carbon emissions are just the same.

In conclusion, pool heater heat pumps are the most efficient types of pool heaters to use, considering costs, efficiencies and CO2 emissions.
