A billiard table at home provides a fun indoor activity with the family. It can also be a form of entertainment for house guests. However, traditional games are usually designed for two players only which then would relegate the others to being mere spectators.

To get more people to actively participate at the billiard table, there are certain variations that we can possibly come up with. For example, a golf pool game can involve more than two players.

What exactly is a golf pool game?

It is simply a mix of both sports played on a billiard table. A golf pool game uses the standard pool table and accessories but the scoring system is similar to that of golf. The six pockets when played for three rounds will complete a full round of eighteen holes, the equivalent of a complete round of golf.

The game starts with each player being assigned a numbered ball. Players hit their assigned balls towards the foot rail, the ball stopping nearest the foot rail winning the ‘lag’. The ‘lag’ determines the order of play or who gets to tee off first and so on. Each pocket is assigned a specific hole number beginning with the right corner pocket as hole number one. The sequence of hole numbers is designated in a clockwise direction.

Each player in a golf pool game tees off by setting the assigned ball number on the foot spot and placing the cue ball anywhere behind the head string. The objective of the golf pool game is to pocket the assigned ball in the current hole in play. As the player succeeds pocketing, he then tries to pocket into the next hole with the cue ball played from where it currently lies. Once a player misses, the next player takes a turn with the same objective.

It is possible for a single player to win by completing all six holes without any other player taking a shot. However, it is remotely possible for others to complete all six holes in one turn when all balls are already in play.

Although a golf pool game is considered a fun game, there are certain rules that prohibit foul plays. Basic billiard or pool rules apply plus a few more variations adapting to the golf pool game. Just a few of these unique rules are pocketing in the wrong hole, hitting the shooter’s ball first and kicking the cue ball off a cushion after a hit.

There are other variations to a golf pool game. Some are specific to a region while some may be unwritten rules among a group of players or friends.

Playing a golf pool game can even be more enjoyable with other creative ideas. You may not need to keep scores in cases where players take alternating turns. In this case the first person to hole out is declared the winner.

Whether playing with family or friends, a golf pool game breaks the monotony of traditional games on the billiard table. It also gives more players to compete with each other all at the same time.

There are probably hundreds or even thousands of different types of billiard tables to choose from. Certain considerations like available space, workmanship, cost, and overall appearance come into play when it comes to choosing the right table for you. When deciding on which one to buy for your home, here are just some tips on what to look for when checking on billiard tables in the market.

In case you are looking at previously owned or used billiard tables, it would be wise to take someone who knows his carpentry work with you. It would help to inspect billiard tables for any damage such as scratches, chips, cracks and liquid stains. Cracks can accumulate mold especially when billiard tables are left in storage and exposed to damp conditions. You should inspect the rails as well for any missing pieces. Diamond inlays should be complete and made of first-rate material. It could be made of pearl or other fine stones. There is no shame in asking what these are actually made of.

The felt table surface is the next most important part of billiard tables as it is where the action happens during game play. It should be free from stain and any tears that could further deteriorate with time and continued usage. Felt on the rails should be in perfect condition for a better bounce on bank shots. Silky felt may be more expensive than cotton felt but it sure is worth the price because of its durability. Also, billiard tables with thicker felt can last longer than those with thinner felt surfaces. To complete inspection of felt on the billiard tables, test the surface by rolling a ball to check if there are bumps or dirt on the table.

The thickness and condition of the underlying slate should also be checked. Make sure that there are no dents or cavities that can change the roll of the balls when playing. In a game of high precision, the table surface should be in excellent condition so as not to spoil the game.

Dead spots can ruin a good bank shot. This is why it is important to make sure that there are no dead spots. The rails should give off a bounce comparable to the ball speed before it hit the rail. Balls that hit the rail and roll off slowly indicate dead spots. These may need repair work or replacement by a professional.

To complete inspection of the table top, make sure that all six pockets are in great condition. For billiard tables with ball return features, you may want to check by putting a ball in each pocket. Balls should return to its right place at one end of the table.

The last item on the list of things to inspect in billiard tables is the feet. To maintain the level surface of the table, billiard tables have adjustable feet. All feet should be adjustable either way.

Now that you have an idea on what to look for in billiard tables, you are just about ready to buy one.

Hi gang,

Its Friday and I am really glad. I had a really stressful week at the office. This weekend I definitely want to try to take it easy and relax by the pool. Its been hard to relax lately as our regular pool season is winding down and we are getting ready for pool cover season. We have all been putting in long hours at the company. Well lets get down to the business of this post, and that is looking at the different types and styles of billiard table lights that are available.

I would say that the most traditional billiard table lights that I have seen are the Tiffany style type. They almost look like stained glass, with the word “Billiards” on them sometimes. You see these in pool halls quite a bit, and are still the traditional lights that you do still see a lot of.

Another style of billiard table lights I am starting to see is the pendant type. These sometimes come in a configuration of three and can vary in style quite a bit. They can come in different styles including some beautiful blown glass types. We sell a style of this type of light that also has a ceiling fan kit attached to it. The fan mounts up on the ceiling, and the light hangs right below it. I really love this style.

And of course all of these billiard table lights come in a huge variety of metal finishes. From antique brass and bronze, to bright or patina ed copper. Stainless steel gives the lights a modern, crisp look. Many styles also include flat or glossy black finishes to even a wood constructed light, that is actually made for the professional pool hall or environment. This one isn’t as nice looking as the hanging pendant types, but offers more and better distribution of light. I guess in the professional circuit, looks wouldn’t be as important as practicality.

What ever style and type of billiard table lights you may like, always make sure you follow manufactures instructions on how to hang it, and what size and styles of light bulbs they recommend to use. Do enjoy your pool tables, as we do ours at home.

I bet you are wondering why someone from a swimming pool supplies company would be giving you advice a billiard table. Well we here at 1800pools consider ourselves to be knowledgeable on everything backyard and indoors when it comes to your leisure. So with that in mind, please read on.

When considering a billiard table there are 3 things to consider. They are how much space to you have set aside for your pool table to be. Is it going to be used for pleasure or for training and competition, and equally important what is your budget.

When purchasing a billiard table for pleasure and/or home use, there are many good models to choose from. Now if you are considering one for professional use and training, then you should purchase a table that is enforced by the Billiard Congress of America (BCA).
